Humphrey Lyttelton's eight-piece band featured, aside from himself on the trumpet and clarinet: Ray Wordsworth on the trombone; Jimmy Hastings on the alto sax, clarinet and flute; Jo Fooks on the tenor saxophone and flute; Rob Fowler on the tenor sax, baritone sax and clarinet; Ted Beament on the piano; John Rees-Jones on the double bass and Adrian Macintosh on the drums.
The band maintained a busy schedule, frequently performing sold-out shows across the country. Performances occasionally included a guest singer, or a collaboration with another band. During the 1990s the band toured with Helen Shapiro in a series of Humph and Helen concerts. They also featured in several Giants of British Jazz tours with Acker Bilk and George Melly and John Chilton's Feetwarmers.
Lyttelton had a long established professional relationship with UK singer Elkie Brooks. After working together in the early 1960s they rekindled their working partnership in early 2000 with a series of sold out and well received concert performances. They released the critically acclaimed album Trouble in Mind in 2003 and continued to perform occasional concerts in support of this work.
This is the Big Band Serenade Mega Christmas Show. It is my gift to you, it is over 4.5 hours long, full of great music to make you day joyous. Listen to it as you unwrap gift or gather together with loved ones.
This brilliant pianist speaks candidly and openly about the prejudice he experienced toward his blindness as a young musician. He recalls joining Claude Bampton and his all blind orchestra in the late 1930s, and arriving in the U.S. in 1946 with $2,000 in his pocket and no prospects for a job. He credits Lionel Hampton pianist Milt Buckner with inventing the locked hand style that would become George?s trademark. Finally, he discusses his new record label, Sheba, and his plans for it.
The actual air show has been lost but we are fortunate to have the original, unedited interview which captures George Shearing?s personality so well.
Arnold Dean offers a retrospective of the year 1941, from fashions (remember the zoot suit?) and books (Keys of the Kingdom, Berlin Diary) to the movies we watched (Citizen Kane, Blossoms in the Dust, Sergeant York). Bandleaders Artie Shaw and Woody Herman describe where they were when they first heard the news of Pearl Harbor.

Although some of his recordings were on the periphery of jazz and his orchestra was at its most popular in the early '40s,
Claude Thornhill's main importance to jazz was the influence that his arrangements and orchestra's sound had on cool jazz
of the late '40s.

Orrin Tucker (born February 17, 1911) was an American bandleader, born in St. Louis, Missouri, whose theme song was Drifting and Dreaming. Tucker's biggest hit was 1939's Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!, sung by vocalist "Wee" Bonnie Baker.

Glenn Miller and His Orchestra performed
for 13 radio shows per week in a BBC studio and were constantly
shuttled to different bases (35, all told) by aeroplanes that
unfortunately had unpressurized cabins, which caused a persisting bad
case of ringing in the ears for Miller. In the next five and a half
months, they would perform in 71 concerts, which were all broadcast
over the Allied Expeditionary Forces Network, beamed at troops in
Britain and elsewhere in Europe. (In fact, one general commented that
Miller's band's performances were the biggest morale boosters for the
enlisted men, next to letters from home). His 'Moonlight Serenade',
which had been recorded under the RCA Victor Bluebird label in 1939,
went on to become America's second national anthem. And even during the
war, Miller continued to rack up civilian fans ? it would seem that the
British princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, were avid followers
and almost never missed his nightly broadcasts.
Bandleader, violinist and trombonist Ted Weems and his orchestra were
among the most popular attractions on the Midwest music circuit
throughout the period separating the two World Wars, earning their
greatest success with the novelty hit "Piccolo Pete."
Theodore Leopold Friedman, better known as Ted Lewis , was an American entertainer, bandleader, singer, and musician. He led a band presenting a combination of jazz,
hokey comedy, and schmaltzy sentimentality that was a hit with the
American public. He was known by the moniker "Mr. Entertainment".
His
recording career spanned from test cylinders for Thomas Edison in 1912
to the stereophonic age in 1980, with total disc sales in excess of 80
million copies. It is doubtful that anyone in popular music had a
longer recording career, one that spanned seven decades.
Her husky, surprisingly sensual voice and exquisitely cool readings of
pop standards distinguished her singing, but Lee Wiley earns notice as
one of the best early jazz singers by recognizing the superiority of
American popular song and organizing a set of songs around a common
composer or theme -- later popularized as the songbook or concept LP.
She was also a songwriter in her own right, and one of the few white
vocalists with more respect in the jazz community than the popular one.
Even more tragic then, that while dozens of inferior vocalists recorded
LPs during the late '50s and '60s, Wiley appeared on record just once
between 1957 and her death in 1975.
Charles Melvin Williams, 10 July 1911, Mobile, Alabama, USA, d. 15 September 1985, New York City, New York, USA. A self-taught trumpeter, Williams first played professionally in the mid-20s, when he was barely into his teens, appearing in the band run by the family of Lester Young. He later played in several New York bands, including those led by Chick Webb and Fletcher Henderson.
Glenn Miller and his orchestra were first heard on CBS radio in 1939. The show was often broadcast from a "remote" location, such as Cafe Rouge, NY, Paradise Restaurant, NY, and other locations. Mr Miller died in an airplane crash during WW II. His music was famous for several more years, as the era of the Big Band declined (many of the members were drafted into the Armed Services). theme songs were used by the band, "Moonlight Serenade"being the most popular
Pete Johnson was one of the three great boogie-woogie pianists (along with Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis) whose sudden prominence in the late '30s helped make the style very popular. Originally a drummer, Johnson switched to piano in 1922.
Sister of Cab, Blanche Calloway was a popular singer and bandleader during the 1930s. She studied music at Morgan State College before dropping out to pursue a career in show business. Her big break came in 1923 when offered a part in a musical touring company. Her vocal talents quickly made her a spotlight entertainer, and she began working nightclubs across the country.

I am sorry for the quality of the sound. My mixer went out.
Wilbur Schwichtenberg, 12 July 1912, Newton, New Jersey, USA, d. 15 July 1989, Flemington, New Jersey, USA. Bradley played trombone with various bands in New York in the late 20s and at the beginning of the next decade established the working pattern for his whole career, combining studio work with playing in name bands. In the early 30s he recorded with Red Nichols and in 1935 was in the band assembled by Glenn Miller that played under the leadership of Ray Noble. In 1939 Bradley formed a big band with drummer Ray McKinley that enjoyed great popular success, owing in part to a string of orchestrated boogie-woogie numbers, including "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight To The Bar".
A self-taught pianist who never learned to read music, Erroll Garner was nevertheless one of the most popular jazz musicians of the 1950s. His swinging piano and gift for melody kept him on the top of the charts, and his most memorable tune, "Misty" (lyrics added by Johnny Burke) was a pop hit for five different artists between 1959 and 1975.
A popular 30s bandleader, Wayne King has been compared to Lawrence Welk and Fred Waring. Known as the "Waltz King," his repertoire was made up of waltzes, novelty songs and sentimental recordings. The sound was copied by other musicians and made Wayne King famous. It was radio broadcasts, such as the Lady Esther Serenade, his Victor recording contracts and performances on Chicago's Aragon Ballroom that sold millions of recordings for Wayne King. Besides being a successful bandleader, Wayne King was also a saxophonist, often playing his instrument in the Wayne King Orchestra.
Among the more prominent of the pop-singing crooners of the mid-twentieth century, Vic Damone recorded more than 2,000 songs during an active career that began in 1947 and spanned 54 years. With a lush and mellow baritone, he possessed one of the finest singing voices of his era and was widely acknowledged by critics as one of the best crooner of the times. Even in his later concerts, his voice never faltered nor did it lose its easy tone. Instead, according to critics, the depth of emotion in his singing voice was improved by life experience as he aged. Damone, who announced his retirement in 2000, embarked on a farewell tour that lasted into 2001. With a sold-out concert at Florida's Kravis Center in February of 2001 and his ultimate farewell concert set at Carnegie Hall in May of that year, Damone closed the chapter on one of the most impressive singing careers on record.
Gerald Walcan Bright, better known as Geraldo (10 August 1904, London, England - 4 May 1974, Vevey, Switzerland) was a British bandleader.
Bright adopted the name "Geraldo" in 1930 to become one of the most popular dance-band leaders of the 1930s with his "sweet music" and his "Gaucho Tango Orchestra". During the 1940s, he modernized his style to continue enjoying great success.

Dorothy Shay,She signed with Columbia Records and recorded a series of hit records. Her biggest hit was "Feudin' And Fightin'" in 1947. In her singing engagements, she performed dressed as a sophisticated urbanite while talking like a rural Southerner. She was popular in clubs, radio and television.
Referred to by Duke Ellington as ?not only the world?s greatest drummer...(but also) the world?s greatest musician!?, Louie Bellson has expressed himself on drums since age three. At 15, he pioneered the double bass drum set-up. At 17, he triumphed over 40,000 drummers to win the Gene Krupa drumming contest.
He has performed on more than 200 albums with such greats as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Woody Herman, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Joe Williams, Wayne Newton and Bellson?s late wife Pearl Bailey.
Bargy's work for the Benson Orchestra established him as a triple-threat talent, and his services were soon sought out by other bands. In late 1921, after a falling out with Benson, Bargy left and formed his own orchestra, taking many members of the group with him. He disbanded a few years later and joined the band led by composer-saxophonist Isham Jones. In 1928, Bargy began a twelve-year association with Paul Whiteman's great dance orchestra as pianist/arranger. Now his experience in editing and writing songs for the old Imperial Piano Roll company stood him in good stead. Many of the early Whiteman arrangements were done by Bargy. He remained with Whiteman until 1940 working not only as a Pianist and arranger, but even becoming second in command and often leading the band when Whiteman couldn't be present. Not too well recalled now, but it was Bargy's piano that was afeatured attraction during Whiteman's famous debut of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue".
During the 1930s Freddy Nagel operated a society orchestra in the Northwestern part of the United States. In the early 1940s Nagel reorganized his band and began to feature swing music. He also expanded his territory into the Midwest. In 1947 Nagel had a short-lived sustaining radio show on ABC, live from the Empire Room of the Palmer House in Chicago. Vocalists were Dick Baldwin and Jane Easton. Nagel also recorded eight songs on Vitacoustic, a new label which went under the following year. Only six were released. Vocalists were Patti Page, Jimmy Jett, and Ted Travers. By 1950 Nagel had given up on the band business. Other vocalists who appeared with Freddy Nagel include Lorraine Benson, Ken Jackson, Bob Locken, and Allen Overend.
In this Universal-International musical featurette (U-I production number 8306)"Harry James and His Music Makers" (which is also the correct title and not "Harry James and the Music Makers", since the Music Makers was the name of his band and was also prefaced with "His"), the featured vocalist with the band is Gale Robbins, with dancers Alain & Ashton also featured. Musical numbers include "Chiribiribin", "Charmaine", "I Got a Crush on You", "Moanin' Low", "The Brave Bulls" and "I'm in a Jam With Baby."
The tall, handsome Monroe, whose signature tune was "Racing With the Moon", was very popular in the 1940s and early 1950s. His band was heard every Sunday on the radio in America (under contract to Camel cigarettes) and played to full ballrooms everywhere they went. Some of the musicians who regularly toured with Monroe included guitarist 'Bucky Pizzarelli', saxophonist Adny Bagni, Bobby Nichols, singer Mary Jo Grogan, Trumpeter Bobby Nichols, trombonist Ray Conniff, and well-known jazz pianist Arnold Ross.
Frederick Alfred (Freddy) Martin (December 9, 1906 ? September 30, 1983) was an American bandleader and tenor saxophonist.Orchestra leader Freddie Martin was not a jazz musician and never tried to be. Martin was, however, probably the most respected tenor saxophonist of the dance band era. The warmth and richness of his tone impressed even the most ardent of jazz performers and earned him the admiration of many. Martin's genius on his instrument also helped make his sweet orchestra one of the most musical of its time and propelled him on a bandleading career that spanned four decades.
Ben Bernie was a popular bandleader in the ?20s-?30s and even into the ?40s although he never picked up on the ?swing? craze. He started out in Vaudeville but enjoyed greater success as a personable bandleader and the host of his own radio show from 1933 to 1937, amusing audiences with his trademark lingo and his opening, ?Yowsah, Yowsah.? His band appeared in several films, the best of which, Wake Up and Live, featured the song, ?There?s a Lull in My Life.? He and columnist Walter Winchell carried on a ?feud? both on radio and in film but in real life were good friends. Dinah Shore sang off and on with his band before she joined Eddie Cantor who was credited with her discovery.
The most notable of his compositions is ?Sweet Georgia Brown? (1925) on which he collaborated with Maceo Pinkard and Ken Casey.
Dubbed "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums.
Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz and imitate every instrument in an orchestra. She worked with all the jazz greats, from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Nat King Cole, to Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman. (Or rather, some might say all the jazz greats had the pleasure of working with Ella.)
She performed at top venues all over the world, and packed them to the hilt. Her audiences were as diverse as her vocal range. They were rich and poor, made up of all races, all religions and all nationalities. In fact, many of them had just one binding factor in common - they all loved her.
Earl Kenneth Hines, universally known as Earl "Fatha" Hines, (28 December 1903 Duquesne, Pennsylvania ? 22 April 1983 in Oakland, California) was "one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz".
Dick Henry Jurgens (January 9, 1910 ? October 5, 1995) was an American swing music bandleader, who enjoyed great popularity in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
Dick Jurgens was born in Sacramento, California to Dietrich Heinrich Jurgens and Clara Matilda (Erath) Jurgens. Jurgens played in an orchestra in high school but was kicked out of the ensemble for playing pop music. In response, he formed his own group in 1928 while still a student. His brother Will Jurgens was a member; Will later became Dick's manager during his years of fame. Jurgens then studied at the University of California at Berkeley and the Sacramento Junior College before accepting an engagement with his own orchestra at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco in 1933. The following year, Jurgens signed a contract with Decca Records, and recorded extensively for the label between 1934 and 1940. Jurgens' vocalist at this time was Eddy Howard.
Jurgens held residencies at the Casino Ballroom on Catalina Island, the Elitch Gardens in Denver, the Aragon Ballroom and the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago, and other popular swing venues. He recorded for Vocalion Records in 1938 and for Okeh Records starting in 1940. His first side to reach Your Hit Parade was "It's a Hundred to One You're in Love with Me" in 1939; the following year, "In an Old Dutch Garden" proved to be a big hit. Jurgens often found that Glenn Miller's versions of his hits performed better on the charts than his own, such as the song "Careless". Following Howard's departure from the group in 1940, Harry Cool became its lead singer. Jurgens scored more hits later that year, with "A Million Dreams Ago" and the instrumental "Elmer's Tune", the latter of which Miller would take a vocal version to number one. Later hits included "The Bells of San Raquel" and "Happy in Love" (released on Columbia Records). His biggest hit was 1942's "One Dozen Roses", with Buddy Moreno on vocals; the song hit #1 in the summer of that year.
Later in 1942, Jurgens disbanded his group due in no small part to the 1942 recording ban by the American Federation of Musicians. He joined the Marines from 1942 to 1945, directing theater shows for the troops. In 1946 he re-formed his band, recording for Columbia and Mercury into the 1950s. He had his own radio show in 1948 on CBS, and also married in December of that year to Miriam Davidson.
Jurgens kept up his group until 1956, by which time his style of swing had long passed out of popular favor. After this he moved to Colorado Springs and founded an electronics business with his brother. He occasionally played at the Broadmoor Country Club in Colorado Springs, and moved to California in 1965, where he again played intermittently. He put together a new band late in the 1960s; he played and recorded with the group on a part-time basis through 1976. His latter years were spent in Sacramento in the real estate business. He sold the rights to his ensemble's name to Don Ring in 1986. He died in 1995 of cancer at age 85.
Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker Jr. (Yale, Oklahoma, December 23, 1929 - Amsterdam, Netherlands May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter and singer.Specializing in relaxed, even melancholy music, Baker rose to prominence as a leading name in cool jazz in the 1950s. Baker's good looks and smoldering, intimate singing voice established him as a promising name in pop music as well. But his success was badly hampered by drug addiction, particularly in the 1960s, when he was imprisoned. He died in 1988 after falling from a hotel window.
Carroll Gibbons (January 4, 1903 - May 10, 1954) was an American-born musician, bandleader and composer who made his career primarily in Britain. He was born and raised in Clinton, Massachusetts. In his late teens he travelled to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1924 he returned to London with the brassless Boston Orchestra for an engagement at the Savoy Hotel in the Strand. He liked Britain so much that he settled there and later became the co-leader (with Howie Jacobs) of the Savoy Orpheans and the bandleader of the New MayFair Orchestra, which recorded for the Gramophone Company on the HMV label. In 1929 Gibbons appeared in the British film Splinters (as Carroll Gibbons and His Masters Voice Orchestra).
Gibbons made occasional return trips to the United States but settled permanently in England, though he did spend a couple of years (1930-1931) in Hollywood, where he worked as a staff composer for MGM films. He took exclusive leadership of the Savoy Hotel Orpheans, which recorded hundreds of popular songs (many of which were sung by Anne Lenner) between June 1932 and his death in London at the early age of 51.
As a composer, Gibbons' most popular songs included "A Garden in the Rain" (1928) and "On The Air" (1932). The latter was covered by Rudy Vallee in 1933 and by Lud Gluskin in 1936. Gibbons' instrumental numbers "Bubbling Over" and "Moonbeam Dance" were also quite successful in the United Kingdom.
Fletcher Henderson, a figure whose place in music history continues to arouse debate and critical discussion, occupied a unique position in the development of jazz. A classically trained pianist, he helped bridge the world of the formal written arrangement with the African-American art of improvisation, creating a new orchestral style in jazz known as "swing." The dominant exponent of the New York, or "eastcoast," style, Henderson launched his career as part of the society orchestra and dance band craze of the 1920s and emerged, by the 1930s, as the leader of a model jazz ensemble.
Big Band Serenade presents its New Years Show with Guy Lambardo
Guy Lombardo was more than just an orchestra leader, he was an institution. Every New Year's Eve at the stroke of midnight millions of listeners from all across America would tune in, via radio and later television, to hear Lombardo and His Royal Canadians play their familiar theme song, ''Auld Lang Syne.'' Lombardo was the consummate bandleader. He presented the kind of music that the general public wanted to hear and to which they wanted to dance, what he called the ''Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven.''
Claude Thornhill (*August 10, 1909 at Terre Haute, Indiana ? July 1, 1965, New York City) was an American pianist, arranger and bandleader. As a youth, he was recognized as an extraordinary talent and formed a traveling duo with Danny Polo, a musical prodigy on the clarinet and trumpet from nearby Clinton, Indiana. As a student at Garfield High School in Terre Haute, he played with several theater bands. After playing for Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Ray Noble, and Billie Holiday, and arranging "Loch Lomond" and "Annie Laurie" for Maxine Sullivan, in 1940 he founded his Claude Thornhill Orchestra. Although the Thornhill band was originally a sophisticated dance band it became known for its many superior jazz musicians and for Thornhill's and Gil Evans' innovative arrangements; its "Portrait of a Guinea Farm" has become a classic jazz recording. The band played without vibrato so that the timbres of the instruments could be better appreciated, and Thornhill encouraged the musicians to develop cool-sounding tones. The band was popular with both musicians and the public; the Miles Davis Nonet was modelled in part on Thornhill's cool sound. The band's most successful records were "Snowfall,""A Sunday Kind of Love," and "Love for Love." The band ceased operation in 1942 when Thornhill entered the military, where he performed with Artie Shaw's United States Navy band, then was revived from 1946 to 1948 at New York. In the 1950s Thornhill became Tony Bennett's musical director, then toured with small groups.
Bob Crosby is best remembered for the Dixieland band that bore his name during the 1930s and early 1940s. The Bob Crosby Orchestra, along with its combo side group, the Bob Cats, was considered one of the greatest jazz bands of all time. The orchestra was actually led by sax player Gil Rodin, however. Crosby himself was simply the front man, chosen for his personality, looks, and famous last name.
Camel Caravan was a musical variety radio program, sponsored by Camel cigarettes, that aired on NBC and CBS from 1933 to 1954. Various vocalists, musicians and comedy acts were heard during the 21 years this show was on the air, including such talents as Benny Goodman, Georgia Gibbs, Anita O'Day and Vaughn Monroe. It debuted December 7, 1933, on CBS as a showcase for Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra later Benny Goodman's band until June 25, 1936. Five days later, the show was reformatted on June 30 as Benny Goodman's Swing School with vocalists Martha Tilton and Johnny Mercer with Jack Oakie's College added to the hour on December 29. While this aired on Tuesdays on CBS until June 20, 1939, another Benny Goodman Camel Caravan was heard Saturdays on NBC during 1939.
The Artie Shaw Band from a radio remote broadcast from the Summer Terrace at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Roof in Boston.
The Artie Shaw Orchestra of 1938-1939 was the best band he ever assembled. Shaw did many big band remotes, and he was also often heard from the Blue Room of New York's Hotel Lincoln. It was the location of his only regular radio series as headliner. Sponsored by Old Gold cigarettes, Shaw broadcast on CBS from November 20, 1938 until November 14, 1939. At the height of his popularity, Shaw reportedly earned $60,000 per week. For a comparison, George Burns and Gracie Allen, were each making US $5,000 per week during the year (1940-41) the Artie Shaw Orchestra provided the music for their radio show. He also acted on the show as a love interest for Gracie.

U.S. jazz trombonist and singer. He worked with two of the most popular bands of the early swing era, those of Ben Pollack (1928?33) and Paul Whiteman (1933?38).
